Berkeley man arrested after student alleges he chased her into apartment
A man accused of chasing a UC Berkeley student into her apartment complex has been taken into custody. Kenneth Kenji Stine, 50, was arrested by Berkeley police following the discovery of an unrelated outstanding warrant, rather than as a direct result of the alleged pursuit.
The incident occurred on September 15, when a student, identified as Eden Winograd, reported that a man approached her and then ran toward her while she was walking her dog. Surveillance footage shows the man scaling a locked security gate at the student's apartment building shortly after she entered.
Berkeley police initially detained Stine the following day after the student spotted him sleeping near her building, but officers released him because California law generally prohibits warrantless arrests for misdemeanors not committed in an officer's presence. The incident gained significant attention after Winograd shared surveillance video on TikTok, which garnered millions of views. Prosecutors are currently reviewing the case to determine if additional criminal charges are warranted.
