Berkeley police arrest man after chasing UC Berkeley student

A UC Berkeley junior, Eden Winograd, was chased into her off-campus apartment complex by a man experiencing homelessness on Tuesday night. Surveillance footage captured the suspect scaling the entrance to the building by using a door push bar as a foothold to leap over the gate.

Winograd reported that she first noticed the man watching her while she was returning from walking her dog. After attempting to create distance by crossing the street, she heard the suspect following her. Although she managed to buzz herself into the secured building, the man scaled the gate immediately after she entered. Officials noted the suspect appeared to be carrying what was likely a barbecue lighter.

Winograd reached her building’s elevator safely and contacted the authorities. Berkeley police located and arrested the man the following day after finding him lying on a sidewalk. The case has been submitted to prosecutors for review.
