Berkelland council to use bell game to promote clear language

The Berkelland municipal council will host ambassadors from the Taalambassade Achterhoek during a political meeting on September 8. The initiative is part of the Week of Reading and Writing, held from September 8 to 15.

To promote the importance of clear and accessible language, the ambassadors will participate in a ‘game with the bell.’ During the discussion of the administrative report, if an ambassador encounters a word, abbreviation, or concept that is difficult to understand, they will ring a bell. The speaker must then provide a clear explanation of the term.

The goal of this exercise is to encourage council members and administrators to be more mindful of their language use. The municipality aims to ensure that government information, such as letters and forms, is understandable for all citizens, including those who struggle with reading or writing, thereby fostering greater civic participation.
