Berkshire Hathaway shifts strategy under CEO Greg Abel with major stock purchases

Under the leadership of new CEO Greg Abel, Berkshire Hathaway has signaled a strategic shift by becoming a net buyer of stocks for the first time in 14 quarters. During the second quarter of 2026, the conglomerate deployed significant capital, including a $10 billion investment in Alphabet and approximately $4.5 billion in share repurchases.

Financial results for the quarter showed robust performance, with revenue increasing 10% to $101.81 billion and operating profit rising 16% to approximately $12.98 billion. Net income more than doubled to $25.67 billion, bolstered by investment gains. Despite these gains, cash reserves decreased to roughly $364.7 billion from a previous record high.

Other notable activities include the $6.8 billion acquisition of homebuilder Taylor Morrison. While the insurance segment, specifically Geico, faced pressure from higher claims and marketing costs, other divisions such as BNSF Railway and Berkshire Hathaway Energy contributed to the overall growth.
