Berkshire Hathaway invests $10 bn in Alphabet to fund AI expansion

Berkshire Hathaway, the investment conglomerate led by Greg Abel, is committing roughly $10 billion to purchase shares of Alphabet, the parent company of Google. The move marks a rare entry into the artificial‑intelligence‑focused technology sector for a firm traditionally associated with insurance, rail, energy and consumer brands. Alphabet’s extensive AI‑related assets—including its search engine, YouTube, Android, Chrome and a rapidly growing cloud business—provide a platform for monetising AI across its ecosystem. To finance its AI infrastructure, Alphabet combines cash flow from advertising and cloud services, debt issuance, and new equity sales. Berkshire’s investment will support the expansion of data centres, chips and compute capacity required for AI development.
