Berkshire Hathaway CEO Greg Abel pivots toward AI and Japanese markets

Berkshire Hathaway CEO Greg Abel is implementing a strategic shift in the conglomerate’s investment approach, focusing heavily on artificial intelligence and international diversification.

Abel has significantly increased Berkshire’s stake in Alphabet, making it the third-largest holding in the company’s equity portfolio with a value of approximately $36.6 billion. Abel identified Alphabet as a ‘significant player’ in the AI sector, noting that the technology is already providing visible benefits within Berkshire’s own operating businesses.

Beyond direct tech investments, Abel is positioning Berkshire to capitalize on the AI boom through infrastructure. Berkshire Hathaway Energy sees a major opportunity in supplying power to the massive data centers required by hyperscalers, provided these projects meet specific community and environmental criteria.

In terms of international strategy, Abel has reaffirmed a long-term commitment to five Japanese trading houses: Itochu, Marubeni, Mitsubishi Corp, Mitsui & Co., and Sumitomo Corp. Berkshire has increased its stakes in these companies to over 10% each, representing an aggregate investment of roughly $13.8 billion. Abel indicated these positions are intended to be held ‘for many decades’ to capture long-term growth and dividends.
