Berkshire Hathaway pours $27 bn into Alphabet, expanding its tech portfolio

Berkshire Hathaway, now overseen by CEO Greg Abel, has bought nearly $17 billion of Alphabet shares over the past three quarters and will invest an additional $10 billion through a private placement as part of Alphabet’s $80 billion equity offering. The move makes Alphabet the conglomerate’s fourth‑largest equity holding and signals a shift toward technology and artificial‑intelligence assets, a departure from Warren Buffett’s historically cautious stance on tech.

The firm also disclosed close to $400 billion in cash reserves, giving it flexibility for further deals, including a recent $6.8 billion acquisition of homebuilder Taylor Morrison. A separate analysis showed that 67 % of Berkshire’s portfolio is concentrated in just five stocks – Apple, American Express, Coca‑Cola, Bank of America and Chevron – highlighting the contrast between its traditional holdings and the new tech focus.
