Berlin A100 motorway extension faces delays and resident opposition

Plans for the 17th construction phase of Berlin’s A100 motorway extension are facing delays and rising costs. The project, intended to extend the highway from Treptower Park to Storkower Straße, is currently evaluating six different route variants to find a technically and legally optimal solution. Due to delays in coordinating technical solutions with the Federal Ministry of Transport, the previously anticipated 2027 start for the planning approval process is now uncertain.

The total cost for the 16th and 17th construction phases has risen to at least 1.8 billion euros. The project involves a 4.1 km motorway expansion and 1.6 km of road upgrades, affecting the districts of Treptow-Köpenick, Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, and Lichtenberg.

Local resistance is growing as the expansion threatens residential areas. Residents of Beermannstraße 16 and 18 have formed a tenant initiative to prevent the demolition of their homes. While previous legal actions saved these buildings during the 16th phase, they are once again at risk. Critics have raised concerns that these properties might be targeted not just for the roadway, but to serve as temporary construction sites or storage areas for building materials.
