Berlin state network cyberattack may have leaked sensitive data

A cyberattack on the Berlin state network has escalated from a minor incident involving public geodata to a potential breach of sensitive information. The Berlin Senate Chancellery reported that personal or other non-public data may have been compromised, specifically within the department for mobility, transport, climate protection, and the environment.

Investigations revealed that hackers gained access to the network as early as August 7, at least a week before the attack was detected on August 14. Following the discovery, several state administrations were temporarily disconnected from the network for security reasons.

Reports indicate that the attack has evolved into an extortion attempt, with ransom demands made to the state of Berlin. Authorities, including the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) and various criminal investigation bureaus, are involved in the ongoing forensic investigation and network scanning, which is expected to last several months.
