Berlin and Brandenburg to end eased Sunday truck driving ban

Authorities in Berlin and Brandenburg have announced that the eased restrictions on Sunday and holiday truck driving bans will expire on September 30, 2026. There are currently no plans to extend these exceptions beyond that date.

The temporary relaxation was implemented to accommodate freight transport that would typically occur via inland waterways. Low water levels in German rivers during summer months had significantly hindered barge traffic, forcing a shift of goods to road and rail to maintain supply chains.

While the relaxation specifically targets transport related to low water levels, the standard ban remains in effect for all other truck transport. The regulations apply to vehicles with a gross weight exceeding 7.5 tons and those with trailers. Similar temporary measures are also being maintained in North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Saarland until the end of September.
