Syria restores international air links with new Moscow and Berlin routes
Syria is rapidly expanding its international air connectivity following a period of isolation. Syrian Air has resumed regular direct flights between Damascus and Moscow as of August 16, 2026, after a suspension lasting more than 18 months. The inaugural flight was reported to be fully booked, and the airline plans to operate the route on a weekly basis, with potential increases in frequency depending on demand.
In addition to the Russian connection, German airline Sundair has restored direct service between Berlin and Damascus, effective August 15, 2026. This route, which operates twice weekly on Tuesdays and Saturdays, marks the return of direct flights between the German capital and Syria for the first time since 2011. This development follows a new bilateral air transport agreement signed in mid-July.
Further expansion is planned with LEAV Aviation scheduled to launch flights between Cologne and Deir ez-Zor starting September 1, 2026. Omar al-Hosari, head of the Syrian Civil Aviation Authority, stated that these efforts are part of a comprehensive plan to reintegrate Syria into the regional and international aviation landscape and to restore confidence in the country's aviation sector.
