Berlin Brandenburg Airport suspends flights after drone sighting
Berlin Brandenburg Airport suspended all flight operations for approximately 45 minutes on Wednesday evening following the sighting of a drone on the northern runway. The incident, which began around 8:00 p.m. local time, led the German air traffic control (DFS) to close both the north and south runways, forcing several aircraft to divert to Dresden and Leipzig.
While airspace was reopened by 9:05 p.m., the disruption caused significant delays for numerous flights. Despite an immediate search by the Federal Police, no drone was located or confirmed at the scene.
This incident highlights a growing trend of drone-related security concerns at the airport. DFS reported 28 drone sightings at Berlin Brandenburg in the first six months of the year, a significant increase from the eight sightings recorded throughout all of 2025. German officials have expressed concerns regarding hybrid warfare, noting that recent drone-related incidents, including an attempt involving explosives at Leipzig/Halle airport, have been linked to Russian intelligence activities.
