Berlin bunker preservation: Berliner Unterwelten opposes demolition

The non-profit organization Berliner Unterwelten is opposing plans to demolish a remaining section of a Nazi-era bunker in central Berlin to make way for high-end residential and office developments. The site, located on Voßstraße, contains approximately 1,200 square meters of the former bunker complex associated with the New Reich Chancellery.

Dietmar Arnold, chairman of Berliner Unterwelten, has proposed transforming the underground ruins into an educational and documentation center. The proposed exhibition would focus on the crimes of the Nazi regime, the final days of the war in Berlin, and the history of the site since 1946. Arnold noted that the organization could independently fund the restoration and argued that the preservation of such a significant historical witness is necessary, especially as the planned new buildings are not intended to provide affordable housing.

The bunker survived decades of urban change, including being located within the ‘death strip’ of the Berlin Wall. While not the specific ‘Führerbunker’ where Adolf Hitler committed suicide, the site served various roles, including as a shelter for mothers and children and a field hospital during the war's end.
