Berlin Cathedral organ to undergo 400,000-euro restoration

The historic Sauer organ in the Berlin Cathedral requires extensive restoration due to damage caused by dust from construction work in the Hohenzollern crypt. Experts have described the situation as an immediate danger to the instrument, which features more than 7,000 pipes and 100 different tones.

Orgelbaubetrieb Sauer, a specialized company based in Müllrose, Brandenburg, has been commissioned to perform the repairs. The project is estimated to cost approximately 400,000 euros. The restoration will involve delicate manual work, including the replacement of over 7,000 membranes to ensure precise airflow control.

Preliminary work began on October 12, with the main cleaning and restoration phase scheduled to run from January to March.
