Berlin climate adaptation: Heat protection costs and tree planting goals

Berlin is facing scrutiny over its urban heat protection and climate adaptation efforts. In the Treptow-Köpenick district, a pilot project known as a ‘Schatteninsel’ (shade island) at Kaisersteg has drawn criticism from the Bund der Steuerzahler regarding its costs. The project, described by local officials as a ‘city furniture ensemble’ consisting of wooden structures, benches, and planters, received approximately 105,000 euros in funding. Of this total, over 56,000 euros were allocated to personnel costs, while the remainder covered material and coordination.

Simultaneously, the city is working toward a massive reforestation goal. Under a new climate adaptation law, Berlin aims to plant roughly 300,000 additional street trees by 2040 to mitigate urban heat. While districts like Tempelhof-Schöneberg have reported net increases in tree counts, experts from BUND Berlin have raised concerns regarding the long-term viability of new plantings, citing issues with spacing, irrigation, and maintenance requirements necessary to ensure the trees reach maturity.
