Housing markets face pressure in Berlin and Greece

In Berlin, Die Linke party is advocating for the socialization of approximately 220,000 apartments to curb rising rents. Party leader Ines Schwerdtner argues that transferring large housing corporations into public ownership is a necessary alternative to the current market. Economic researchers from the Hans-Böckler-Stiftung suggest that while this move could dampen rent increases and improve social mixing, it would require an estimated 13.5 billion euros in compensation and would not solve the underlying housing shortage, which requires new construction.

In Greece, the housing market is facing extreme pressure, particularly in the rental sector for affordable properties. Data from Spitogatos reveals a massive imbalance between supply and demand. In Athens' Northern Suburbs, for rentals under 600 euros, there are as many as 281 searches for every available property. This demand for low-cost housing is significantly higher than for luxury rentals, where pressure drops by up to 42 times. The shortage of small, affordable apartments is driving widespread desperation among potential tenants.
