Berlin court bars AfD member from higher police service

The Berlin Administrative Court rejected an emergency request and upheld the state’s decision to withdraw a provisional appointment for the higher service of the criminal police. The applicant, a police officer since 2011, had been elected AfD faction chair of a municipal council in Brandenburg and applied for a study leading to the higher police rank starting 1 April 2026. Berlin cited “reasonable doubts about his constitutional loyalty” because the AfD Brandenburg was classified as a secured right‑wing extremist endeavour. The court found these doubts sufficient to deny the appointment. After the state rescinded the provisional offer, the applicant resigned his municipal mandate. He may appeal the decision to the Higher Administrative Court of Berlin‑Brandenburg.
