Berlin court sentences former IS member to prison
The Kammergericht Berlin has sentenced a 35-year-old German woman to three years and three months in prison for membership in a terrorist organization abroad. The defendant traveled to Syria in December 2014 to join the Islamic State (IS) alongside her husband.
According to the court, the woman radicalized quickly after converting to Islam in Berlin. During her time in Syria, she lived in various women's shelters and reportedly convinced a friend from Berlin to join the group as well. The presiding judge, Delia Neumann, stated that the defendant represented the menschenverachtende, radical-islamist views of the organization with full conviction.
The defendant surrendered to Kurdish forces in March 2019 and escaped from the Al-Hol refugee camp in Turkey in 2020. She was arrested by federal police at Berlin-Brandenburg Airport in April 2024 upon her return to Germany. While the defendant confessed to the charges, the court noted that she had not yet demonstrated a convincing distancing from radical ideologies.
