Berlin CSD attacker deceived police about radical intentions
Abdul Ballout, the suspected attacker of the Christopher Street Day (CSD) event in Berlin, reportedly deceived security authorities regarding his intentions in the weeks leading up to the July 25 attack. According to a chronology from the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Ballout claimed during contact meetings with the Berlin police that he had renounced his radical views and intended to live a law-abiding life.
Following a previous conviction related to a failed attempt to join the Islamic State, Ballout told officials in May that he was starting anew, promising to follow the law and undergo therapy. While he did confirm participation in deradicalization sessions, intercepted phone calls by the Berlin State Criminal Police Office (LKA) raised doubts about his sincerity. Authorities noted that Ballout exhibited conspiratorial communication patterns, often abruptly ending conversations when they risked drifting into radical content, suggesting he was aware of potential surveillance.
On July 25, Ballout drove a rented van into a crowd in Berlin's Tiergarten during the CSD festivities and subsequently attacked attendees with a machete. The attack resulted in one death and numerous injuries.
