Berlin cultural sites face major renovations and rebranding

The Berlin Museumsinsel, a UNESCO World Heritage site, faces upcoming structural challenges. Marion Ackermann, president of the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz, stated that the Altes Museum urgently requires a general renovation due to cracks in its walls, with work scheduled for the 2030s.

The Pergamonmuseum remains under extensive renovation with an estimated cost of 1.5 billion euros. While certain sections, such as the Altar Hall, are expected to reopen in 2027, the full reopening of the museum is not anticipated until 2037. Other major cultural sites in Berlin, including the State Library, are also slated for significant renovations starting in 2030.

Separately, the Stadtmuseum Berlin is undergoing a strategic rebranding to become the "Berlin Museum." Developed in collaboration with the agency Stan Hema, the new brand aims to move away from a traditional image toward a more accessible identity. The new design utilizes typography inspired by everyday Berlin life, such as subway stations and local landmarks, to better connect with the city's residents.
