Berlin digital chief Matthias Hundt retracts resignation request amid insolvency investigation

Matthias Hundt, who was appointed Berlin's State Secretary for Digitalisation and Chief Digital Officer in March 2026, announced on May 29 that he is no longer asking to be released from his post. Earlier in the week he had submitted a formal request for dismissal, prompting criticism from opposition parties and a pending replacement announcement.

Hundt's withdrawal follows renewed scrutiny of his former company, SDC Sachsen Digital Consulting GmbH. An insolvency proceeding was opened in November 2025 after two health insurers filed for bankruptcy, and the Deutsche Rentenversicherung began a audit of unpaid contributions. Prosecutors in Dresden are also investigating the case. Hundt has denied responsibility for the insolvency and says disputes over minor health‑insurance contributions have been resolved.

The Berlin Senate has named Florian Hauer as Hundt's successor, adding the responsibilities to his existing role as State Secretary for Federal and European Affairs.
