Berlin district disputes urban tree planting standards

The Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district has announced it will withdraw from Berlin’s urban tree campaign following a dispute with the Senate Environment Administration. The conflict centers on the technical standards for new street tree plantings.

District Councilor Oliver Schruoffeneger stated that the Senate’s requirements for tree pit volumes are insufficient to ensure long-term quality and sustainability. While the Senate’s standards involve smaller volumes, Schruoffeneger argued that professional guidelines, such as those from the FLL, require significantly larger volumes—ranging from 12 to 36 cubic meters—to meet climate adaptation laws. The district reported that attempts to implement these higher standards and cover the additional costs themselves were unsuccessful.
