Berlin Election Commissioner warns of election delegitimization
Berlin State Election Commissioner Stephan Bröchler has issued a warning regarding the increasing delegitimization of elections, noting that such trends pose a threat to the legitimacy of parliaments and governments.
Bröchler expressed concern that unsubstantiated doubts about properly conducted votes undermine trust in democratic processes. He specifically addressed claims regarding irregularities in postal voting at nursing homes, stating there is no empirical evidence to support such allegations. He warned that making baseless claims risks damaging the integrity of the entire electoral system.
Furthermore, the commissioner highlighted a new dimension of disinformation spreading via social media. He noted that false or misleading information now spreads significantly faster than official corrections can reach the public. To combat this, Bröchler is engaging with major social media platforms to identify and respond to disinformation campaigns more rapidly during and after election periods.
