Berlin election debate focuses on urban property ownership

As part of the 2026 Berlin election cycle, political parties are presenting diverging strategies regarding property ownership and urban development. The debate centers on whether land and housing should be managed by the state, cooperatives, or private investors.

The Green Party and Die Linke support the implementation of the ‘Deutsche Wohnen & Co. enteignen’ referendum to socialize large housing stocks. In contrast, the CDU and AfD reject the socialization of housing. These decisions regarding land sales and property management are viewed as critical factors in determining the availability of affordable housing, the creation of new districts, and the preservation of public spaces for social and cultural use.
