Berlin environmental group proposes measures for Climate Adaptation Act

The Berliner Landesarbeitsgemeinschaft Naturschutz e. V. (BLN) has released a position paper regarding the implementation of the Berlin Climate Adaptation Act (KAnGBln). The document provides 14 specific recommendations aimed at strengthening Berlin's urban greenery, including measures such as planting trees in a way that ensures longevity and utilizing currently sealed surfaces for new plantings.

A key focus of the proposal is the prioritization of preserving old trees over new plantings, noting that established trees provide essential climate-related welfare benefits that take decades to develop. In response to inquiries regarding the Pankow district, officials noted that tree protection is currently managed through the Berlin Tree Protection Ordinance, which requires individual assessments for felling permits. The paper also suggests strengthening the protection of street trees by potentially amending the Berlin Street Act to classify them as street accessories.
