Berlin evacuations follow discovery of WWII bomb

A massive security operation took place in Berlin after a 100-kilogram World War II bomb was discovered in the bed of the Neukölln shipping canal. The discovery near the busy Sonnenallee necessitated a 500-meter safety perimeter.

The evacuation affected approximately 5,600 households, including an elderly care home, a homeless shelter, and a nursery. Around 200 police officers worked alongside the fire department, the Red Cross, and technical relief organizations to manage the situation. Emergency shelters were established for those displaced.

Bomb disposal experts successfully neutralized the explosive device, allowing the area to be cleared. The incident highlights the ongoing risks posed by unexploded ordnance remaining in German soil.
