Berlin faces rising homelessness and mental health challenges

Berlin is experiencing a significant increase in homelessness, with official 2024 data indicating more than 6,000 people are without permanent housing. Experts note that many of these individuals suffer from mental illness, often in combination with drug addiction.

Psychiatrist Dr. Herald Hopf suggests that the visibility of these issues in large cities is influenced by higher levels of tolerance and the presence of vulnerable migrant populations, particularly from Southeast Europe, who may face higher rates of social and psychological challenges.
