Berlin implements flexible workspaces in administrative buildings

The state of Berlin is implementing the Flexible Workplaces (FAO) concept to modernize administrative buildings and increase space efficiency. A primary example is the Spreeforum in Berlin-Moabit, a landmark administrative building designed by Josef Paul Kleihues in the mid-1990s.

As part of a renovation for BIM Berliner Immobilienmanagement GmbH, the interior has been redesigned using an activity-based working principle. The new layout moves away from rigid individual offices toward flexible environments that support various tasks, including project work, group collaboration, and quiet focus. The design utilizes a biophilic concept featuring oak wood, muted green tones, and subtle rose accents to create a calm atmosphere. The space is utilized via a desk-sharing model and includes various room types such as telephone booths, meeting rooms, and quiet zones.
