Berlin launches pilot program to expand public restroom access

The state of Berlin has launched the ‘Berlin WC Kooperationsprogramm’, a pilot project designed to increase the availability of public restrooms by utilizing existing private infrastructure. Starting August 1, businesses such as cafes, restaurants, and shops can open their toilets to the public free of charge in exchange for financial support from the state.

The program is scheduled to run until the end of 2027. Participating businesses will be identified by a visible project sticker at their entrance, which also indicates if the facilities are barrier-free or include changing tables. Locations can be found via the ‘Berliner Toilette’ app and the Berlin Geoportal.
