Berlin launches pilot program to expand public toilet access

The Berlin Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection and the Environment has launched the ‘Berlin WC Cooperation Program’ to increase the number of publicly accessible toilets in the city. As part of this pilot project, which is scheduled to run until the end of 2027, private businesses such as restaurants, cafes, and shops will open their restrooms to the public for free and without the requirement of a purchase.

In exchange for providing these facilities, participating businesses will receive a flat-rate expense allowance from the state of Berlin. To help citizens identify participating locations, active partners will display a window sticker indicating whether the facilities are unisex or gender-separated, barrier-free, or equipped with a changing table.

Currently, 13 partners across seven districts have joined the initiative. Participating locations will be listed on the official project website and can be found via the ‘Berliner Toilette’ app and the Geoportal location map.
