Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner to forgo re-election following scandal
Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner has announced he will not run as the lead candidate for the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in the upcoming September 20 city council elections. Wegner, 54, stated that his ability to communicate important issues to citizens has diminished, remarking, “it has become clear to me in recent days that my arguments on important issues no longer reach the hearts of the citizens.”
The decision follows a scandal involving a major power outage in southwestern Berlin in January, which affected approximately 45,000 households and 2,200 businesses. While the city was under a state of emergency and many residents were left without heating during winter temperatures, it was revealed that Wegner was playing tennis with a woman for over an hour. Although he initially claimed he was working in his home office, the statement was proven to be false.
Wegner expressed that the loss of public trust has made his position untenable, noting that “other topics have overshadowed everything else.” The situation highlights a strict standard of political accountability in Germany, where perceived insincerity or inappropriate conduct during crises can end political careers.
