Berlin Parliament security breach leads to arrest

A man has been arrested after gaining unauthorized access to the visitor gallery of the Berlin State Parliament (Abgeordnetenhaus). The incident occurred on July 2, during which the individual reportedly spoke loudly and gestured conspicuously.

Security personnel, specifically bodyguards for Interior Senator Iris Spranger, initially subdued the man before handing him over to the police. While the individual passed through initial security and received a visitor pass, he had not registered for the visitor gallery. A multi-tool was discovered in a piece of luggage he had left at a cloakroom.

The State Protection unit of the State Criminal Police Office (Landeskriminalamt) has taken over the investigation to determine if there is a political motive. The man faces suspicion of disrupting the activities of a legislative body and assault. Police confirmed that no firearm was found on his person.

In response to the breach, the Abgeordnetenhaus has tightened access requirements; individual visitors will now only be permitted to enter the parliament building during plenary sessions if they have registered in advance.
