Berlin Philharmonie renovation could cost up to 1.15 billion euros
A feasibility study commissioned by the Berliner Philharmoniker indicates that the renovation of the Berlin Philharmonie could cost approximately 800 million euros. When including the potential need for an interim performance venue, total costs are estimated at roughly 1.15 billion euros.
Intendantin Andrea Zietzschmann noted that the building has not undergone fundamental repairs since its opening in 1963. The orchestra reports that issues with fire protection, climate control, cabling, and plumbing could prevent smooth daily operations starting by 2032 or 2033.
To mitigate the impact of the renovation, which is expected to begin around 2032, the orchestra has suggested using the former Tempelhof Airport as a temporary venue, a project estimated to cost 350 million euros. Funding remains a complex issue; while the federal government has pledged up to 225 million euros through the capital financing contract and the state of Berlin has allocated 350 million euros in its investment budget, a significant funding gap remains.
