Berlin Plans High‑Rise Housing on Former Parking Lots

The city of Berlin is earmarking former parking facilities and garage sites for dense residential construction, including several high‑rise towers. One highlighted project on Hohenschönhauser Straße in the Lichtenberg district will replace a former bus parking area with a 16‑storey building offering roughly 580 new apartments, developed by the housing association HOWOGE. The plan aims to increase the supply of subsidised rentals and make use of already sealed land, while neighbourhoods raise concerns about the loss of parking spaces for cars.

The development map published by the city identifies the locations where parking areas will be repurposed and outlines alternative provisions for vehicle storage. The proposals are part of broader efforts to address Berlin’s housing shortage by intensifying construction on under‑used urban sites.
