Berlin police face exodus following Left Party election victory
A significant number of Berlin police officers are seeking transfers to other German states following the recent election victory of the Left Party (Die Linke). According to reports and surveys, at least 72 officers have requested or applied for transfers to states such as Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Thuringia, and Bremen. This surge significantly exceeds previous years, where only 22 to 36 officers moved annually.
Baden-Württemberg has emerged as the primary destination, with 57 to 58 officers expressing interest. The state's Interior Minister, Manuel Hagel, has actively recruited Berlin's personnel, stating that those who stand for the rule of law are “always welcome.”
The exodus follows political shifts in Berlin, as the Left Party's platform includes potential reductions in police staffing, duties, and equipment. Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann criticized the political climate in Berlin, accusing the Left Party of being closer to “chaotic” elements than to law enforcement. Meanwhile, Berlin police officials note that while formal applications are currently low, the high volume of inquiries to other states suggests a growing trend that could lead to long-term personnel shortages.
