Berlin political activity intensifies ahead of upcoming elections
Political tensions are rising in Berlin ahead of the September 20 elections. The AfD has sparked controversy with a campaign poster featuring its top candidate, Kristin Brinker, alongside former Berlin mayors, including Willy Brandt. Brinker defended the choice, stating these figures are role models who were deeply committed to the city. However, the move has drawn sharp criticism from political opponents and the family of Willy Brandt. Steffen Krach of the SPD described the poster as “unspeakable,” while Matthias Brandt, son of the former Chancellor, stated that his father stood for everything the AfD opposes and should not be instrumentalized.
In a separate political event in Reinickendorf, CDU Bundestag faction leader Thorsten Frei addressed approximately 100 guests to advocate for a strong CDU in the capital. Frei focused on the necessity of economic growth and enhanced security to protect German prosperity and freedom. He specifically highlighted the need for a more decisive response to hybrid threats, citing recent drone incidents at Leipzig airport attributed to Russia, and emphasized the importance of maintaining Germany's competitiveness as a major industrial nation.
