Berlin Pride attack leads to security reviews for Canadian and Swiss Pride festivals

A terrorist attack during Berlin's annual CSD Pride event on a Saturday night left one person dead and 29 injured after a driver rammed a crowd with a mini‑van and then stabbed people with a machete. German authorities described it as an Islamist‑motivated act, and the suspect, 21‑year‑old Abdul Ballout, was killed in a police operation.

In Ottawa, Capital Pride announced it will reassess its security arrangements for the upcoming parade and street festival. Chair David Breault said the organization will hold discussions in the coming weeks to decide whether to strengthen or modify protections, noting that growing anti‑2SLGBTQ+ sentiment has already prompted increased measures.

Swiss Pride organisers in Aarau and Chur (Khur) are also reviewing their safety plans. Pink Cross co‑president Adrian Knecht called the Berlin tragedy "a stabbing to the heart of the queer community" and said local police are incorporating the incident into their ongoing risk assessments. Police spokesperson Sarah Furrer confirmed that security concepts for the September events were already drafted and will be adjusted if needed.
