Berlin Pride Attack Spurs Calls to Ban Extremist Mosque Groups
A terrorist attack targeted the Christopher Street Day (CSD) parade in Berlin. Court spokespersons described the attacker, Abdul Ballout, as "reifeverzögert" and noted he had been monitored an hour before the assault.
CDU candidate for the September 20 Berlin election, Stefan Evers, responded by demanding a ban on mosque associations that preach anti‑constitutional content, urging the use of association‑law provisions. He made these comments on RTL and n-tv’s "Frühstart" program and called for Islam to be addressed in school curricula, pointing out Berlin lacks a compulsory religion class.
The Khadija Mosque in the Heinersdorf district organized an open Friday prayer on 31 July and three public dialogue events on 1, 8 and 15 August under the motto "Muslims for Peace – Together against Extremism". Imam Scharjil Khalid said Islam was instrumentalised in the attack and stressed the need to counter extremism.
The Organization for Victims of Terrorism (VoT Germany) urged those affected by the CSD attack to accept available help and support.
