On the night of 25‑26 July 2026 a white van rammed into the crowd at Berlin’s Christopher Street Day (CSD) parade in the Tiergarten park, just before 22:00. The attack killed a woman and injured 29 people, many seriously. Police identified the suspect as 21‑year‑old Abdul Ballout, a German citizen of Lebanese descent who was already known to security services, had a prior conviction for preparing a terrorist offence and was under a deradicalisation programme.

A massive manhunt involving about 2,200 officers, helicopters and thermal‑imaging cameras was launched. Ballout fled the scene, attacked police with a knife/machete and was later shot dead by officers during a raid in Spandau. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt classified the incident as an Islamist‑motivated terrorist attack. Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Interior Minister Dobrindt and Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner publicly condemned the attack, describing it as an assault on Germany’s open, liberal society. The parade was halted and solidarity rallies were held in other German cities.
