Berlin protesters demand resignation of Chancellor Friedrich Merz

Thousands of protesters gathered in Berlin to demand the resignation of Chancellor Friedrich Merz and the calling of early elections. Organized by the non-partisan citizen movement ‘Project Million’ led by Marcel Baldauf, the demonstration marched from the Brandenburg Gate through the city center.

The protesters’ eleven-point program includes calls to halt current migration policies, abolish carbon dioxide taxes, introduce elements of direct democracy similar to the Swiss model, and end mandatory public service broadcasting fees. Participants also voiced criticisms regarding high energy prices.

This unrest occurs amid deepening political polarization in Germany. Recent polling indicates a significant systemic divide, with 40% of Germans viewing the AfD as a threat to the democratic system and 31% viewing the ‘Left’ as such. This growing fragmentation is characterized by a shrinking political center and strengthening opposing wings, which observers suggest is creating a climate where political opponents are increasingly viewed as existential threats to the state.
