Berlin protests planned against military conscription
A large-scale protest titled ‘unzwingbar: Kein Bock auf Krieg und Wehrpflicht!’ is scheduled for October 2, 2026, at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. The event aims to oppose the potential reintroduction of compulsory military service, increased armament, and war rhetoric. The demonstration is expected to draw several thousand participants and will feature musical performances by artists including K.I.Z and Disarstar, alongside speeches from peace organizations and civil society representatives.
In support of similar sentiments, the IG Metall Berlin union has officially passed a resolution against conscription and militarization. The union expressed opposition to the expansion of the Bundeswehr and the proposed ‘needs-based conscription,’ citing concerns that young people are not sufficiently involved in the decision-making process. IG Metall Berlin argued that funds allocated for military recruitment and armament should instead be prioritized for education, social security, and healthcare systems.
