Berlin reports progress on 2020–2030 waste management strategy
The Berlin Senate has reviewed the third implementation report for the 2020–2030 Waste Management Concept (AWK). The report details the 2024 material flow, greenhouse gas, and environmental balance, alongside the implementation status of measures for 2025.
In 2024, household and commercial waste totaled approximately 791,200 tonnes, averaging 203 kilograms per person. This figure falls within the target corridors established by both the base and ecological scenarios for 2025 and 2030. The strategy adheres to the waste hierarchy, prioritizing prevention over reuse, recycling, and final disposal.
Ute Bonde, Senator for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection, and the Environment, stated that Berlin is on track with its zero-waste strategy. She emphasized that while most measures are underway, continued cooperation between citizens, the economy, and the administration is essential to prevent waste generation and ensure clean separation of recyclables.
