Berlin reports shift in Mpox transmission patterns

Health authorities in Berlin are reporting a shift in the transmission patterns of Mpox. While the virus has primarily affected men who have sex with men, recent data from the State Office for Health and Social Affairs (Lageso) indicates an increase in infections among women and heterosexual contacts.

In August, Lageso reported two women and one man had contracted the virus, likely through anonymous sexual contact in clubs or private settings. This brings the total number of Mpox cases reported to women in Berlin this year to four.

Berlin has recorded 156 Mpox cases so far this year, surpassing the 144 cases reported during the same period last year and significantly higher than the totals for 2023 and 2024. Nationally, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) has reported 375 cases in Germany as of late August, with 98 percent of those cases occurring in men. Epidemiologists expressed concern that the virus is entering new demographic groups that may be less informed or vaccinated.
