Berlin residents grapple with oak processionary caterpillar infestation

Massive swarms of oak processionary caterpillars have spread across several Berlin districts, especially Jungfernheide park in Charlottenburg‑Wilmersdorf. The urticating hairs of the caterpillars cause skin rashes, eye irritation and respiratory problems, prompting many children to develop eruptions and older residents to stay indoors.

Local authorities have taken limited action because the insects are not classified as a traditional pest, restricting the use of biocides. As a result, residents have organized a petition demanding a city‑wide protection plan and specific measures for affected green spaces. The situation remains unresolved, with ongoing health complaints and community frustration over the lack of an official response.
