Germany pledges long-term Ukraine support after failed Russia talks
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has stated that Russia shows no interest in serious negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. This assessment follows a meeting in New York between German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, the first high-level diplomatic contact between the two nations since the 2022 invasion.
Merz emphasized that Germany remains committed to supporting Ukraine through military, political, financial, and economic means for the long term. He warned that Russia will not win the conflict and will face massive economic damage if the war continues. Merz also identified Ukraine's lack of air defenses as a critical vulnerability and noted that he is personally working with global leaders to secure more air defense systems for Kyiv.
In response to the meeting, Sergey Lavrov claimed that the discussions with Wadephul contained no new information and merely repeated official German positions. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius criticized the Russian response, describing it as containing nothing but insults rather than meaningful diplomatic shifts.
