Berlin state network hit by major cyberattack
A major cyberattack has targeted the Berlin state network (BeLa), causing significant disruptions to government operations. The attack has forced the isolation of two key Senate departments: the Department for Urban Development, Building and Housing, and the Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection and the Environment.
As a result of the network isolation, employees in these departments are reportedly unable to work, with internet access, email communication, and home office capabilities severely restricted. The BeLa network, managed by ITDZ Berlin, serves as a critical digital lifeline connecting approximately 600 government and public institution locations across the city.
An ICT emergency crisis team has been established under the leadership of the State Commissioner for Information Security to coordinate response and forensic investigations. The Berlin State Criminal Police Office (LKA), the Berlin Public Prosecutor's Office, and the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) are all involved in the investigation. While officials have not confirmed the full extent of the breach, reports suggest that sensitive data may have been compromised. IT experts have criticized the city's cybersecurity preparedness, noting that the administration is poorly positioned to handle such incidents.
