Berlin tax office reviews VVN-BdA non-profit status

The Berlin Tax Office for Corporations I has notified the Association of Persecutees of the Nazi Regime – Federation of Antifascists (VVN-BdA) that its non-profit status is under review. The authority has requested early tax returns for the years 2024 and 2025, citing concerns that the organization’s activities, specifically its campaign for a ban on the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, may jeopardize its charitable status.

The VVN-BdA, an organization dedicated to the legacy of Nazi victims and educational work, has characterized the move as an attack on democratic civil society. The organization argues that campaigning against the AfD is a necessary action to preserve democracy and human rights.

The scrutiny follows reports from various media outlets and calls from legal academics. Critics of the tax office's decision point to the political implications, noting that the Berlin tax administration falls under the responsibility of Finance Senator Stefan Evers. The VVN-BdA maintains that its opposition to far-right extremism is consistent with its historical mission and should not be classified as inadmissible political activity.
