Berlin implements AI-powered surveillance at Kottbusser Tor
Starting in early November, a new AI-supported video surveillance system will go into operation at Kottbusser Tor in Berlin. The system utilizes 30 cameras across 15 locations to monitor the area 24/7.
The technology is specifically programmed to recognize movement patterns associated with violence, such as fighting or physical assaults, as well as emergency situations involving helpless individuals. When the AI detects these patterns, it triggers an acoustic warning signal and activates monitors at the local police station to provide real-time video feeds for officers to assess.
Berlin Interior Senator Iris Spranger stated the goal is to recognize dangerous situations earlier to provide better protection. Project leader Markus van Stegen clarified that the system does not use biometric facial recognition and does not register characteristics such as skin color, gender, or clothing. Data is scheduled to be deleted after 30 days unless required as evidence for criminal proceedings. The rollout will begin with a four-week trial phase.
