Berlin trial: Man accused of drugging, raping, and filming 58 women
A 68-year-old man is currently on trial in Berlin, accused of drugging, raping, and filming 58 women. Investigations revealed that the victims often only learned of the assaults during the course of the investigation.
Criminologist Daniela Klimke, a professor at the Police Academy of Lower Saxony, notes that such crimes are primarily driven by power rather than sexual gratification. The use of sedation allows perpetrators to exert extreme control, as victims are unable to defend themselves or may lack memory of the events.
Furthermore, the act of filming adds a layer of exploitation. Perpetrators can archive or share the footage, effectively extending the crime beyond the initial incident. In digital perpetrator communities, these recordings can serve as trophies and tools for social recognition.
