Berlin urban development: Infrastructure and construction projects

Berlin is undergoing several significant urban development and infrastructure projects. In the Mitte district, the historic Stettiner Tunnel, which once connected two neighborhoods and later served as part of the Berlin border fortifications, is being preserved as a monument. The Berliner Unterwelten association is working to restore the original portal of the 180-meter-long structure.

In the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf area, extensive construction is affecting the Breitscheidplatz, Tauentzienstraße, and Kurfürstendamm. While utility work is expected to conclude in November 2026, broader construction in the City West is projected to continue until 2031, impacting traffic and pedestrian access.

Additionally, the planned expansion of the A100 city motorway faces political scrutiny. An activist alliance has presented five demands to potential coalition partners to influence the decision regarding the 17th construction phase, which would extend the highway from Treptower Park toward Friedrichshain and Lichtenberg.
